Love Portal and LEGO? Support This Amazing LEGO Ideas Set!

Are you a fan of Portal, Portal 2, or Half-Life? If so, there’s a LEGO Ideas project you need to see.

Check out this Portal-themed LEGO set: [LEGO Ideas Submission](https://ideas.lego.com/projects/5bf2eccb-d18a-4637-a97e-bb3dc85e5f4c).

A LEGO Set Every Portal Fan Will Love

This LEGO Ideas project brings the world of Portal or, more accurately, Portal 2 to life with incredible detail. The design stays true to the game, featuring recognisable elements like test chambers, portals, GLaDOS as the main attraction, and yes, even Wheatley is there. There is also potential to add new sections or components to the set, enhancing its representation of iconic game features.

Whether you enjoy building for display or playing with interactive sets, this one has something to offer. The set is built with intricate details that capture the puzzle-solving nature of Portal, making it a great addition for LEGO and gaming fans alike. The design and representation of the characters and elements from the game are really cool, adding to the overall appeal of the set.

Imagine recreating iconic moments from the game using LEGO bricks. The set has the potential for interactive play, allowing you to experiment with different test chamber setups. If you love the challenge and creativity of Portal, this LEGO set is the perfect way to bring that experience into the real world.

The Portal Series and Its Iconic Characters

The Portal series, created by Valve Corporation, has captivated gamers with its unique blend of first-person puzzle-solving and dark humour. At the heart of this critically acclaimed franchise is GLaDOS, the sadistic and passive-aggressive artificial intelligence that guides players through the game’s challenging chambers.

GLaDOS’s witty banter and sinister motives have made her one of the most memorable characters in video game history. Her presence adds depth and intrigue to the game, making every interaction a blend of humour and tension. For fans of the Portal series, GLaDOS is not just a character; she is an icon.

The LEGO Ideas Campaign for GLaDOS

The LEGO Ideas campaign for GLaDOS was launched by hachiroku24, a passionate LEGO enthusiast and devoted Portal fan. This campaign aimed to bring the iconic character to life in LEGO form, capturing GLaDOS’s intricate design and unique personality.

This isn’t the first time Hachiroku2 has tackled GLaDOS or Portal Two. Their previous project quickly gained momentum, amassing the necessary 10K votes on the LEGO Ideas platform to get through to the LEGO approval stage, which unfortunately didn’t pass. This more detailed set might have what it takes to get through, as it has already hit over 3000 supporters since the 21st of January!

This overwhelming support from the community highlights the dedication and creativity of Portal fans, showcasing the potential for a LEGO GLaDOS set to become a reality. The campaign’s success is a testament to the enduring appeal of GLaDOS and the Portal series.

Design and Features of the LEGO Set

The proposed LEGO GLaDOS set promises to be a masterpiece of design and engineering. Featuring a highly detailed and poseable representation of GLaDOS, the set includes moving parts and intricate design elements that capture the essence of the character. Fans will appreciate the inclusion of iconic accessories, such as the cake from the end of Portal 1, and walls that are part of GLaDOS’s design. This set is not just a build; it’s an experience, offering a unique and challenging project that brings the beloved character to life. For fans of the Portal series and LEGO enthusiasts alike, this set is a must-have addition to their collection.

Bringing the Portal Universe to Life with LEGO

The Portal series is renowned for its rich and immersive universe, blending science fiction with dark humour. A LEGO Portal series would offer fans a new and exciting way to experience this world, with sets that bring the game’s iconic locations and characters to life. Imagine building the Aperture Science Enrichment Center or the crumbling ruins of the old Aperture facility. Each set would offer endless opportunities for creative building and storytelling, allowing fans to recreate their favourite moments from the game or invent new adventures within the Portal universe.

How You Can Help with the Project

As with all LEGO ideas sets, this set needs your support to become an official LEGO product. So, if you’re a fan of Glados from Portal or this set in particular, why not show your support?

– Click the link above.

– Hit the “Support” button.

– Share it with other Portal and LEGO fans.

Do you want to see this set on store shelves? Your vote makes a difference.

Well, well, well… it looks like Mattel has finally decided to step up and take another swing at the brick-building world with their new brand, the Mattel Brick Shop, which will drop its first products this May (2025). This launch marks an exciting new chapter in Mattel’s evolution, aiming to revolutionise the building toy market. That’s right—Lego’s dominance is being challenged again, this time by a company that has been making toy cars, dolls, and technically bricks for years. But should Lego be worried? Or is this just Mega Bloks in a new outfit? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is the Introduce Mattel Brick Shop?

According to Mattel’s big announcement to introduce the Mattel Brick Shop, the Mattel Brick Shop is their new, dedicated home for all things brick-related. It’s a sleek, modern-looking online store that promises a whole new take on construction toys. It features themed building sets from Mattel’s biggest brands, like Barbie, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Fisher Price, Masters of the Universe and more, giving fans a fresh way to engage with their favourite franchises – maybe.

But here’s where things get a little interesting. Mattel already owns Mega Bloks (or Mega Construx, as Mattel rebranded the Bloks for a while). That’s been their answer to Lego for decades. So… is this a completely new thing, or are they just slapping a shiny new logo on the Mega Bloks we’ve been stepping on since the ’90s?

The new product line under the Mattel Brick Shop brand aims to innovate with quality designs, ease of use, and increased piece counts, offering builders customisation opportunities.

Update: If you look at the Mattel site and look for ‘all brands,’ there is no mention of Mega Bloks or Mega Construct. If you search ‘mega’, the only mention is in the footer and is to their building instructions, which makes me think the Mattel brick shop is a rebrand.

Key Features and Offerings of Mattel Brick

A Worthy Rival or Just More Mega Bloks?

Mattel is making a big deal about this new initiative in the construction toy market, but let’s be honest—Mega Bloks has been around for years, and while it has its fans, it’s never come close to dethroning Lego. Some of their sets have been great (the Halo and Pokémon lines were genuinely solid), but overall, their bricks just don’t have that same click of satisfaction as Lego.

And now, Mattel is trying again with the Mattel Brick Shop, but what’s different? From what we can tell, this is more of a branding move rather than a full-scale revolution. It seems like Mattel is consolidating all its brick-related efforts under one roof, making it easier for fans to find and buy Mega Bloks—sorry, Mattel Bricks. Additionally, Mattel aims to offer these new sets at a competitive price point, ensuring that customers can enjoy high-quality designs without breaking the bank.

The Good, the Bad, and the Brick-y

The Good:

Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Polly Pocket sets could be a big draw. Mega Bloks has done cool things before, and focusing on these franchises might work. The innovative features of these sets make them particularly appealing to a wide range of builders.

More competition is always good—even if Lego remains king, having Mattel push innovation might bring some fresh ideas. These new sets are designed to inspire builders by encouraging creativity and innovative construction techniques.

Availability in the US & Canada now, with global expansion likely later.

The Bad:

It’s still Mega Bloks—and while some people love them, the general brick-building community knows they’re just… not Lego. However, Mattel Brick Shop aims to attract customers by offering building sets at accessible price points, ensuring affordability without compromising on quality.

Quality concerns—Mega Bloks have historically had issues with clutch power (the way the bricks stick together), making builds feel a little flimsy. Mattel Brick Shop is committed to delivering innovative building sets that surpass builders’ expectations, addressing these quality concerns with elevated designs and authentic details.

Is this really new? It’s more of a rebranding than a genuine Lego competitor.

Verdict: Is it a Serious Competitor in the Construction Toy Market or Just a PR Move?

Honestly, the Mattel Brick Shop looks more like a reorganisation of their existing brick efforts rather than a true Lego challenger. It’s basically Mega Bloks with a new storefront, but maybe—just maybe—Mattel is setting the stage for something bigger. Roberto Stanichi, the global head overseeing Mattel’s vehicles and building sets division, is leading this initiative.

If they can improve their brick quality and bring in more unique IPs, they might have a shot at making Lego sweat. This launch could be an exciting new chapter for Mattel, signifying their commitment to revolutionising the building toy market. Until then, Lego fans probably won’t be losing sleep over this one.

What do you think? Will you be checking out the Mattel Brick Shop products in May 2025, or are you sticking with the classic Danish bricks? Let us know in the comments!

A while ago, LEGO announced the new Mario sets, and with it a new partnership with Nintendo. And while I was all for the idea of interactive sets that bridge the gap between LEGO and interactive electronic play, the thing I was really excited about was the Nintendo partnership itself!

Nintendo owns some of the most well known video game characters of all time, including Zelda & Link, Mario & Luigi, Starfox, Samus, Donky & Diddy Kong, Animal crossing… I mean the list goes on (but be sure to tell me your favourite in the comments).

And that excites me!

That excites me because I am a massive Zelda fan, and gamer in general, and this new set from Nintendo and LEGO shows that this partnership is pretty serious.

Not only do we get a very accurate and lifelike rendition of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) itself, but we also get a retro TV and a controller.

Now, when I first saw the set, I wasn’t immediately amazed, I mean, the NES is a blocky as a LEGO brick, and though the TV had charm, was it all worth £200+ to me – someone who sadly missed out on owning an NES for real.

But then… then I saw it in motion!

Yes, there is a hidden handle on the side of the TV, and with a turn, the TV comes to life. The iconic Mario scenery starts scrolling by, and Mario jumps over obstacles and through the course. It is a sight to behold. And instantly for me makes sense at the price point. This is something that has been designed out of love and respect to Nintendo and Mario. It’s a work of art.

Check it out below

Lego has announced the new Harry Potter sets launching this summer, including the Burrow and Hogwarts astronomy tower. Most of these new sets will be launching on 1st June, but many have come up for preorder already 🙂

If you are a fan of Harry Potter then you are probably as excited about the new lineup as I am. I am excited for the Burrow and the flying Hedwig model. Which set are you most excited about?

Below we go over all the new sets

Hogwarts Astronomy Tower

Hogwarts Astronomy Tower Front

The new Hogwarts Astronomy Tower makes a great companion piece to the already released Hogwarts sets, such as the clock tower and great hall.

This LEGO Hogwarts playset gives you the freedom to explore the many fascinating rooms of Hogwarts castle, and includes minifies of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Horace Slughorn, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Ron Weasley, Lavender Brown, Draco Malfoy and Hedwig.

Hogwarts Astronomy Tower Back

Hedwig (with flapping wings)

The new Hedwig set is especially intriguing to me, because it is a mechanical set that features flapping wings, which I think is a nice feature.

Bring the magical personality and elegant movement of Hedwig™, the celebrated snowy owl from the Harry Potter™ movies, to life. The collectable LEGO® Harry Potter Hedwig (75979) display toy offers a rewarding building experience and looks magnificent on show.

Buildable Hedwig the owl with ‘flying’ wings
With a wingspan of over 13” (34cm), this 630-piece brick-build model shows Hedwig in flight, delivering an important letter. Once the build is complete, a turn of a handle causes the jointed wings to move gracefully up and down. The collectable model stands on a sturdy base with a detachable LEGO Harry Potter Minifigure and another, smaller, Hedwig the owl toy with wings spread open.
lego.com

Attack on the Burrow

The Burrow is one of my favourite locations from Harry Potter. Not only is the burrow the home to the Weasleys, but it is beautifully wonky and almost heath Robinson in design. It is interesting to see that Lego managed to create a piece that is not perfectly straight, as you can see, the top is on a slant.

Will Death Eaters burn down The Burrow?
There’s so much to do and discover in The Burrow, the Weasley family house, that one side of the highly detailed dollhouse toy opens up to provide lots more space for kids to play. With 8 minifigures, play can begin right away. As kids recreate the famous scene where the evil Death Eaters, Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback, attack, fire elements can be used to recreate the fire that devastates the building.
lego.com

4 Privet Drive

Harry Potter fans will have endless fun with Harry, Ron Weasley™, Dudley Dursley, Vernon Dursley, Petunia Dursley and Dobby™ minifigures. They’ll enjoy imaginative play all over the fully equipped 2-story house, including locating Harry’s secret cupboard under the stairs and activating the flood of Hogwarts™ acceptance letters through the letterbox.

Collectible Harry Potter flying car toy
The magical excitement continues outdoors when Ron appears at the upstairs window with the flying Ford Anglia. Kids open the trunk to attach a chain to its hook and, very soon, the window is dragged off and Harry escapes!
lego.com

Hogwarts™ Room of Requirement

LEGO® Harry Potter™ Hogwarts™ Room of Requirement (75966) transports young witches and wizards into a magical world as they join a group of friends on a secret mission to overcome powerful dark magic.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix™ role-play toy
Fans of Harry Potter can recreate classic movie moments and conjure up imaginative adventures of their own with Harry, Hermione Granger™ and Luna Lovegood™. Dumbledore’s Army is practising spells in the mysterious Room of Requirement. Kids can help Harry teach the Patronus charm. There’s a Hare for Luna and an Otter for Hermione. Power shooters fit into the minifigures’ hands and fire at the mechanical Death Eater toy. With a host of cool features and accessories, the magical fun will never end!
lego.com

Forbidden Forest: Umbridge’s Encounter

Harry Potter™ fans can create a magical world of giants, centaurs and enchanted trees as they enter the Forbidden Forest with LEGO® Harry Potter Forbidden Forest: Umbridge’s Encounter (75967).

Minifigures and magical creatures in the Forbidden Forest
Kids enter the Forbidden Forest with 3 minifigures – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger™ and Dolores Umbridge™ – and cast a spell to open the large tree and reveal a selection of accessories: A lantern, bone and turkey leg. There are 2 centaur figures and a posable giant Grawp that kids can use to pick up Umbridge and take her… wherever they want. Young witches and wizards will love acting out classic moments from Harry Potter movies and dreaming up magical adventures.
lego.com

Welcome to our Master Builder series, where we highlight the exceptional builders in the Lego World. Today I was lucky enough to get an interview (via email! Stay home everyone!) from the very talented ExeSandbox (Tong Xin Jun), who has recently hit the 10K barrier on LEGO Ideas with his amazing design of the Krusty Crab from Spongebob. Make sure you check out ExeSandbox’s other creations too! There is a lot of outstanding work.

Let’s get right to it!

The Interview

Bricks Blog: Hello and thanks for doing this interview! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Exe: Hi, glad to be able to do this interview! I’m a LEGO builder from Malaysia, and I’m currently 17 years old.

Bricks Blog: When did you start building?

Exe: I started building as soon as I got my first set, I guess! (Which was a Bionicle Stars figure.) But I took building seriously after I entered a LEGO contest on Rebrick in 2016 (It’s a now defunct site that used to host a plethora of LEGO Contests, many of which I participated in.), which happened to be a Bionicle related one. After that hardcore experience, I wanted to get better at building.

Bricks Blog: What do you love most about LEGO?

Exe: I think what I love most is the opportunity LEGO provides for anyone to build anything they want. There’s seemingly nothing that can’t be created with LEGO, and along with just how easy the building system is to grasp, I’m always wanting to try new ideas that has not been seen before.

Bricks Blog: How does it feel to have a project hit 10K supporters?

Exe: It’s a mixture of fulfilment, and joy with a hint of sadness (and relief) that it’s finally over and the reigns will be handed over to LEGO, which is really exciting too. Even till now, I’m actually still having to let it all sink in…

Bricks Blog: Have you always been a fan of Spongebob?

Exe: Yeah, I have always enjoyed the cartoon since I was a kid, it’s one of, if not the show that I’ve watched the most throughout my life. I wasn’t a hardcore fan that would buy tons of Spongebob merchandise (admittedly, I haven’t bought a single Spongebob related item except for the DVDs.) But it’s only recently, because I’m a lot older, that I really started to appreciate just how amazing the cartoon is. So building the Krusty Krab just felt right at home!

Bricks Blog: Do you have ideas of what you might create next?

Exe: Well, as for LEGO Product Ideas, I have no clue. Actually, I have been thinking about some ideas, but until I can feel it in my bones that I know people would like the idea, I would just take a step back and brainstorm for some more time. (I actually just don’t like the idea of having the “EXPIRED” title on my entry, so I have to try to make sure it’s successful.)

Bricks Blog: Favourite Lego Theme?

Exe: Hero Factory.

Bricks Blog: Favourite Lego set?

Exe: 10265 Creator Expert Ford Mustang. (I wanted to put something Bionicle or Hero Factory here, but there’s just no beating the Mustang.)

Bricks Blog: A question you wish we asked you, and answer it. – i.e. What is your favourite brick, or what is your favourite Minifigure.

Exe: Hmm, let’s see…ummm….well….. my brain got stuck, so I’ll just go with “What is your favourite Minifigure?” – I don’t know if this can be considered a Minifigure, but as soon as I saw Sweet Mayhem from The LEGO Movie 2, I just thought she was the best looking fig I’ve ever seen. (Sadly I haven’t bought the figure. A decision I still question to this very day.)

The End

Well, I hope you enjoyed the short email interview! Thank you very much ExeSandbox for taking the time to reply to my interview questions! ExeSandbox is great and I wish him luck as his Lego Ideas set enters the review stage. Fingers crossed we get the set 🤞and I can’t wait to see what comes next from this Master Builder!

Hopefully that level of support will help it through The Lego review process, and we will soon get our very own Spongebob Krusty Crab set!

What do you think about the set? Did you support the project? Let me know in the comments below ❤️

Lego Ideas Project Description

About the model:

Introducing my very first Product Idea, a definitive MOC of The Krusty Krab from the beloved cartoon Spongebob Squarepants originally created by Stephen Hillenburg back in 1999. With (almost) every detail, plank and wall of the restaurant faithfully recreated from the show, I have also tried to capture the charming aesthetics of the Krusty Krab, which I hope fans of both LEGO and Spongebob can appreciate.

If this makes it to become a set, I think it would just be a magical experience to see iconic restaurant that we’ve always watched through a screen actually sitting on your desk and to be able to interact with it, whether it is recreating your favorite scenes from the cartoon or creating new ones from your imagination, this set is your oyster!

Background:

I was initially surprised by the lack of an accurate LEGO representation of the Krusty Krab on the internet, which given the popularity of the iconic underwater eatery, I thought many skilled builders would have been up to the task. Being a fan of both Spongebob and LEGO, I took it as an opportunity to create the best version I could. It was a fun and difficult process altogether, but this project have given me a newfound appreciation of the beautiful and genius design of the Krusty Krab. Something like that truly comes once in a lifetime!

Features:

– The complete Krusty Krab package with fully designed exterior and interior, (including the Kitchen, Office and Bathroom.) with removable roofing for complete access to the inside.

– A few fun and small builds such as the must-have “Krusty Krab” clam sign, as well as a dumpster and a boatmobile to top off the Spongebob experience. (Also includes a couple Krabby Patties. How could we forget those.)

– All 6 of the main characters in their LEGO forms! (Spongebob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy and Plankton.)

Other Info:

Number of Pieces: 2996 (It’s a miracle I was able to pull this off at that parts count.)

The model measures 32 x 48 (10 x 15 in).

Built with LEGO Digital Designer and Mecabricks.

The Lego Ideas Big Bang Theory set was designed by Ellen Kooijman AKA Alatariel. You may remember the name from the Research Institute set, and yes, it is the same designer. So not only was Ellen lucky enough to get one set passed, she actually did it TWICE! Which is quite the accomplishment I think you’ll agree?

Firsts

This set is special because it is the first time Lego Ideas made a set based on a TV show, as the few licensed properties up to now had been films and video games. This set and the design and minifigs definitely lead the way to the Friends central perk set that came a few years later.

Official Description

Includes 7 minifigures with assorted accessory elements: Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Howard, Raj, Amy and Bernadette

Features Leonard and Sheldon’s living room with all the iconic elements from the sitcom, including a telescope, whiteboard, DNA display model and various ornaments

Build an authentic replica of Leonard and Sheldon’s living room in LEGO® bricks!

Great for display or role-playing scenes from the TV series

Includes a booklet about the designers and the hit American sitcom

The perfect gift for LEGO® and The Big Bang Theory fans of all ages!

Measures over 3” (8cm) high, 8” (22cm) wide and 4” (12cm) deep

The Lego Ideas birds project was one of the first Lego Ideas projects to get mass appeal and coverage from many news outlets.

Master Builder

The set was created by British designer Tom Poulsom AKA DeTomaso. And though the final set featured just three models (robin, blue jay, and hummingbird), Tom had created many more lego bird designs. They are worth checking out, for inspiration if you want to add a few birds to your collection.

Official Description

Features 3 models: a Blue Jay, Hummingbird with flower, and a Robin

Includes a presentation stand for each bird featuring its Latin name

Enjoy building and rebuilding these intricate models

Display the birds using their specially designed stands

Recreate the birds that received over 10,000 votes from LEGO® Ideas members

Learn more about the species in the booklets provided

Includes building instructions and information about the creator

The perfect gift for fans of LEGO® bricks and birds alike

Blue Jay stands over 7” (18cm) tall on its stand

Hummingbird stands over 5” (15cm) tall on its stand

Robin stands over 6” (17cm) tall on its stand

HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL PROJECT?

Well, in a similar way to the Research Institute, The Lego birds project was originally a series of birds covering about 25 birds in total. Near the end of the voting state, perhaps with Legos input, the project entered a mini voting stage where people could vote for their favourite birds within the project. From this, it was suggested that the set would feature the three birds we see in the final set.

I think there are clear reasons why some of the birds wouldn’t make it to the final three. Some for example, include what Lego would consider “illegal” building technics, and may be trickier for some people to build at home – which is why they are illegal in the first place.

The official statements are below:

Due to the new CUUSOO terms of service I have had to change the idea behind my project.

I think it would be a great shame and an anticlimax for all of my dedicated fans and supporters if there was only one bird in a set from the dozens I have built so far for this project.

So I now suggest a set of three or four recognisable birds from around the world.

Below I have listed three small birds that came top in a recent supporter vote. I think these could easily be recreated by LEGO’s professional builders.

Bobby The Robin Red Breast
Bradley the Blue Jay
Victor The Violet-eared Hummingbird

These three birds are well recognised around the world and would allow a larger target market as there is one European bird, one North American bird and a tropical bird.

In an ideal world I would like each bird to have a perch and a little plaque with information about the specific bird. I think it would be a bonus to have a soundbrick somewhere in the build with the relevant birds song or call.

If there are any concerns that LEGO CUUSOO have with creating multiple birds in one set and we have to choose just one then Bobby the Robin Red Breast would be my choice. He was the first bird I built and the inspiration behind this whole project. He is also one of the worlds most recognised small birds. If LEGO CUUSOO think that they could create a set using a different bird from my substantial collection then I would be happy for them to use one of these.

After all of the effort I have put into this project I really want it to pass the review stage so I am quite flexible with what the final set would consist of, the above are suggestions as to what I think would work best.

I find birds a great subject to build with LEGO and I’m sure from the great response I have had on this project that thousands of other people would too.

I also think that if these birds were turned into official sets they would be inspirational to both children and adults and would be a great gift for anybody. They would sell very well in zoos, museums, wildlife centres, and of course the LEGO store.

I really enjoy matching the different colours and features of our beautiful feathered friends and I hope that one day anybody else can have the chance to build their own bird from LEGO.

To see the birds I’ve built so far in more detail click on their name, but please don’t forget to support the project before you go elsewhere. Once you’ve supported please re check my page to see if you are actually “supporting” the project.

British Bird Series

Bobby Robin
Kingsley Kingfisher
Billy Blue Tit
Penelope Puffin
Gloria Goldfinch
Woody Woodpecker
Barney Barn Owl
Magnus Magpie
Percy Pied Fly Catcher
Rodney Redstart

Tropical Bird Series

Tiago the Toco Toucan
Carona Canary
Leeto and Latifah the LoveBirds
Victor The Violet-eared Hummingbird
Gordon The Gouldian Finch
Marky the Macaw
Horace the Hyacinth Macaw
Lonnie the Long-Tailed Manakin

North American Series

Stormy the Snowy Owl
Scotty the Scarlet Tanager
Norman the Northern Cardinal
Peter the Painted Bunting
Andy the American Goldfinch
Eric the Eastern Bluebird
Bradley the Blue Jay

I really hope you enjoy these Birds and support me to help them take off.

Which one of my LEGO Birds is your favourite?

Thanks for looking and to everybody that has supported so far, we are so close now!!!

Thomas Poulsom
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/ef54a715-0e35-4110-a16d-a40e1bd84607
